    The Indian Institute of Legal Studies has been selected for the 22nd Dewang Mehta Business School Awards scheduled on 15th November 2014 at Taj Lands End, Mumbai in the "Education Leadership Award" category in recognition of the high quality of teaching-learning methods, all round grooming of students, practical training, co-curricular programmes, innovative academic practices and best methods of governance which have been implemented in the college.     The Vertical Interaction Course ( VIC ) of senior IPS Officers at national – level on “ Criminal Justice System : Need for Co-ordination” was conducted during Nov.3 till 7th Nov.,2014. The VIC is approved by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (B.P.R.&D. ), Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi. The VIC was inaugurated by Hon'ble Justice Biswanath Somadder , Judge, Calcutta High Court as Chief Guest. Mr.Joyjit Choudhury, Chairman, IILS presented the Welcome Address. Prof. Somnath Ghosh , Vice-Chancellor, NBU presided over the session. Mr.Jawed Shamim, IG, North Bengal and D.M., Darjeeling could not attend but they sent message of greetings. The Technical sessions started from 2 pm of 3.11.14 and will continue till 7.11.14 daily from 10 am till 5 pm with a lunch break.     Professor Raghunath Ghosh, Professor of Law, University of North Bengal delivered a Special Lecture on " Philosophy and Law " before an assembly of all students of the Indian Institute of Legal Studies on 24.9.14 at 2.30 pm. The presentation was for one hour and followed up with interaction with students and teachers. The meeting was presided by Dr.T.K.chatterjee, Director, Indian Institute of Legal Studies who also spoke during the discussion stage. The event was appreciated by all present.

    Dr.Md.Yasin, Professor in Political Science, University of North Bengal delivered a Special Lecture on 15.9.14 at 12 noon before an audience comprising students of B.A. LL.B. semester I,III and V. The Lecture was on the principal features of democratic governance in India drawing its strength from the Indian Constitution. Prof. Yasin also deliberated on the linkage between Political Science as a subject of study in LL.B. courses and Constitutional Law. The presentation was followed by intense discussion and interaction with the students.

    Celebration of Teachers Day on Sept.5-6. The Teachers Day was celebrated with due dignity and respect in the Indian Institute of Legal Studies (IILS) on 5th and 6th September. The students organised the programme on 5th. It started with speech by Mr.Joyjit Choudhury, the Chairman, IILS and was followed by speeches of Dr.T.K.Chatterjee, Director, IILS and Father Cherian, Principal of the St.Xaviers College, Rajganj, Siliguri. Some of the students also spoke about the significance of the Day. Father Cherian was felicited by the Chairman, IILS. The students also felicitated each of the teachers and the non-teaching staff. Subsequently, they presented cultural feats like songs, dances and recitation. The TeachersDay was observed on 6th September by honoring some senior teachers of Siliguri for their contribution in teaching. We honoured Professor B.P.Dwivedi, Department of Law, NBU and former Registrar, NBU besides Father George, Principal of Selesian College, Second Campus, Siliguri and seven other Principals of different schools. Mr.Joyjit Choudhury, Chairman, IILS presided over the function. He felicitated the Principals. The Chairman presented a highly articulated speech in commemoration of the great contributions of Dr.Radhakrishnan, the legendary teacher. Father George of Salesian College delivered the speech of the Chief Guest. Other Guests like Prof. B.P. Dwivedi and the Principals also delivered speech to commemorate the 127th birthday of Prof. Dr.Radhakrishnan. The valedictory session was conducted by Mr. Abhishek Bhargava, Assistant Professor in Law, IILS and concluding speech was delivered by the Principal (officiating), IILS Celebrating the Teachers Day is the recognition of the devotion, with which teachers undertake the responsibility of educating a child academically as well as morally. The programme concluded with National Anthem.

    A Programme to provide Legal Aid to the poor and marginalized people was organized by students of the Indian Institute of Legal Studies on 31.8.14 at Nanda Prasad High School, Naxalbari in association with Darjeeling Police and Lions Club of Naxalbari. A large number of distinguished citizens of Naxalbari were present besides students of the local schools and the residents in and around Naxalbari. The laws relating to early marriage of girls before age of 20 yrs., registration of marriage, procedure of birth / death registration and settlement and redress of common disputes which impact the daily lives of the villagers were discussed in details. The speakers included Mr.Sourav Sen, O.C. of Naxalbari P.S. and Mr.Indranath Dey, Mr.Sayantan Mukherjee, Mr.Amit Dutta, Mr.Suparswa Chakraborty, all teachers of Indian Institute of Legal Studies. Some students of the college also addressed the participants and explained the legal provisions. The meeting was presided over by Mr. Narendra Prasad.

    Legal Aid Camp was held at Kalimpong on 15.6.14 ( Sunday ). It was inaugurated by Hon'ble Justice Biswanath Somadder, Judge, Kolkata High Court. The officials of the State Legal Services Authority, Darjeeling District, judicial officials, NGOs and the local media were present. The students of the Indian Institute of Legal Studies, duly assisted by the faculty , provided legal advice to the local beneficiaries and other stake holders. Mr. Joyjit Choudhury, Chairman, Indian Institute of Legal Studies presided over the meeting and supervised the activities.

    A Symposium entitled “ Role of Media in Justice Delivery System " was held on 12.5.14 at 12 noon in the Indian Institute of Legal Studies in collaboration with the Siliguri Journalists' Club. The Symposium was attended by the representatives of the Media in Siliguri besides our teachers and students. Hon’ble Justice Biswanath Somadder and Hon'ble Justice Arindam Sinha, Judges of Calcutta High Court kindly graced the Symposium as the Chief Guest and Special Guest respectively and present their views in the Symposium. A Panel Discussion on the Topic was held after the inaugural session participated by the Hon'ble Judges and senior media personnel. Dainik Jagran, Siliguri was the media partner of the Symposium and its contribution in organising the even is sincerely acknowledged.

    * A Special Lecture on “The Indian evidence Act” was delivered by Hon’ble Justice Arindam Sinha, Judge, Calcutta High Court on 11.5.14 during 3 pm to 4.30 pm in the Conference Hall of the University of North Bengal, Administrative Building. *The Indian Institute of Legal Studies is proud and delighted to announce that a total of 85 students have obtained First Class rank in the examinations of the University of North Bengal held in December, 2013. The over-all success rate is as high as 94%. The students were felicitated in a ceremony held on 11.5.14 at 3 pm in the Conference Hall of the University of North Bengal, Administrative Building. Hon’ble Justice B.Somadder, Judge, Calcutta High Court and Hon’ble Justice A.Sinha, Judge,Calcutta High Court kindly graced the ceremony as Guests of Honour and felicitated the students. The performance of all the qualified students were also appreciated in the programme. *The parents of all the students were present in the felicitation ceremony.

    A delegation of NATIONAL LAW COLLEGE, Kathmandu, Nepal consisting of seven students and one Teacher visited the Indian Institute of Legal Studies under Academic Exchange / Visit programme during May 16-18, 2014. The legal education system of India and Nepal as well as the legal system of the two countries were discussed in details during meetings with the delegation. Other technical issues concerning prosecution, adjudication, court structure, justice delivery systems, Bar Council of India etc. were discussed. The students and teachers of IILS exchanged experience with their counterparts from Nepal. The delegation was felicitated on 17.5.14 at 1 pm in a ceremony at IILS.

The Lecture was on the principal features of democratic governance in India drawing its strength from the Indian Constitution. Prof. Yasin also deliberated on the linkage between Political Science as a subject of study in LL.B. courses and Constitutional Law.     Celebration of Teachers Day on Sept.5-6. The Teachers Day was celebrated with due dignity and respect in the Indian Institute of Legal Studies (IILS) on 5th and 6th September. The students organised the programme on 5th. It started with speech by Mr.Joyjit Choudhury, the Chairman, IILS and was followed by speeches of Dr.T.K.Chatterjee, Director, IILS and Father Cherian, Principal of the St.Xaviers College, Rajganj, Siliguri. Some of the students also spoke about the significance of the Day. Father Cherian was felicited by the Chairman, IILS. The students also felicitated each of the teachers and the non-teaching staff. Subsequently, they presented cultural feats like songs, dances and recitation. The TeachersDay was observed on 6th September by honoring some senior teachers of Siliguri for their contribution in teaching. We honoured Professor B.P.Dwivedi, Department of Law, NBU and former Registrar, NBU besides Father George, Principal of Selesian College, Second Campus, Siliguri and seven other Principals of different schools. Mr.Joyjit Choudhury, Chairman, IILS presided over the function. He felicitated the Principals. The Chairman presented a highly articulated speech in commemoration of the great contributions of Dr.Radhakrishnan, the legendary teacher. Father George of Salesian College delivered the speech of the Chief Guest. Other Guests like Prof. B.P. Dwivedi and the Principals also delivered speech to commemorate the 127th birthday of Prof. Dr.Radhakrishnan. The valedictory session was conducted by Mr. Abhishek Bhargava, Assistant Professor in Law, IILS and concluding speech was delivered by the Principal (officiating), IILS Celebrating the Teachers Day is the recognition of the devotion, with which teachers undertake the responsibility of educating a child academically as well as morally.     A Programme to provide Legal Aid to the poor and marginalized people was organized by students of the Indian Institute of Legal Studies on 31.8.14 at Nanda Prasad High School, Naxalbari in association with Darjeeling Police and Lions Club of Naxalbari. A large number of distinguished citizens of Naxalbari were present besides students of the local schools and the residents in and around Naxalbari. The laws relating to early marriage of girls before age of 20 yrs., registration of marriage, procedure of birth / death registration and settlement and redress of common disputes which impact the daily lives of the villagers were discussed in details. The speakers included Mr.Sourav Sen, O.C. of Naxalbari P.S. and Mr.Indranath Dey, Mr.Sayantan Mukherjee, Mr.Amit Dutta, Mr.Suparswa Chakraborty, all teachers of Indian Institute of Legal Studies. Some students of the college also addressed the participants and explained the legal provisions. The meeting was presided over by Mr. Narendra Prasad.

    Legal Aid Camp was held at Kalimpong on 15.6.14 ( Sunday ). It was inaugurated by Hon'ble Justice Biswanath Somadder, Judge, Kolkata High Court. The officials of the State Legal Services Authority, Darjeeling District, judicial officials, NGOs and the local media were present. The students of the Indian Institute of Legal Studies, duly assisted by the faculty , provided legal advice to the local beneficiaries and other stake holders. The Symposium was attended by the representatives of the Media in Siliguri besides our teachers and students. Hon’ble Justice Biswanath Somadder and Hon'ble Justice Arindam Sinha, Judges of Calcutta High Court kindly graced the Symposium as the Chief Guest and Special Guest respectively and present their views in the Symposium. A Panel Discussion on the Topic was held after the inaugural session participated by the Hon'ble Judges and senior media personnel. The over-all success rate is as high as 94%. The students were felicitated in a ceremony held on 11.5.14 at 3 pm in the Conference Hall of the University of North Bengal, Administrative Building. Hon’ble Justice B.Somadder, Judge, Calcutta High Court and Hon’ble Justice A.Sinha, Judge,Calcutta High Court kindly graced the ceremony as Guests of Honour and felicitated the students.     A delegation of NATIONAL LAW COLLEGE, Kathmandu, Nepal consisting of seven students and one Teacher visited the Indian Institute of Legal Studies under Academic Exchange / Visit programme during May 16-18, 2014. The legal education system of India and Nepal as well as the legal system of the two countries were discussed in details during meetings with the delegation. Other technical issues concerning prosecution, adjudication, court structure, justice delivery systems, Bar Council of India etc. were discussed. The students and teachers of IILS exchanged experience with their counterparts from Nepal. The delegation was felicitated on 17.5.14 at 1 pm in a ceremony at IILS.
